What is I.S.A.P.S. ?
The I. S.A.P.S. is the official specialist plastic and aesthetic surgery branch of the IPRAS (International Confederation for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery). Founded in 1970 at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the Society takes in nearly 1000 members from 61 countries. Its purpose is to promote the exchange of scientific information and various views between plastic surgeons around the world, whilst respecting the ideas and customs peculiar to each culture.
Code and Ethics:
A member of I. S.A.P.S. must:
- Serve humanity with full respect for the dignity of all persons.
- Strive always to improve medical skills and make available to patients and colleagues the benefits of professional knowledge.
- Practice methods of healing on a scientific basis and not associate professionally with anyone who does not abide by this principle.
- Strive to protect the public and the profession against physicians who are incompetent s or have a low moral character.
- Observe all laws, honour the dignity of the profession and accept self-imposed discipline.
- Expose illegal or unethical conduct of fellow members of the profession.
- Render proper service in an emergency.
- Refrain from soliciting patients.
- Limit the source of professional income to medical service actually rendered. Fees will be fair and just and commensurate with service rendered.
- Dispense drugs, medicines and appliances only when in the best interest of the patient.
- Seek consultation upon request in doubtful or difficult cases, or if the quality of medical service may be enhanced.
- Never reveal confidences shared with them regarding the care or inadequacies of a patient, unless required to do so by law.
- Honour the ideals of the medical profession and participate in activities that improve the health and well-being of the individual patient.
All qualified Plastic Surgeons from the National Council of the College of Physicians, are not necessarily I.S.A.P.S. members however.
I.S.A.P.S. Membership is by invitation.
Application: To begin the joining process, the candidate must obtain sponsorship in the form of a letter of recommendation from two active I.S.A.P.S. members and contact the national representative of the IPRAS in respect of the formalities.
Active Members: Applicants only will become fully active members on the basis of a recommendation from the authority for plastic and aesthetic surgery representing IPRAS in their country. To be eligible for I.S.A.P.S. membership, a candidate, after finishing his/her formal training, must have actively practised plastic surgery for at least three years, but in no event for less than seven years after obtaining his/her degrees from medical school.
