Walk-in surgery is also called day surgery.
Walk-in surgery allows patients to go home on the same day as they are admitted following a surgical procedure or an exploratory operation.
This practice of walk-in surgery is, in many surgical cases, an alternative to shorter or longer hospitalization with accommodation when the procedure does not require complicated aftercare. It is performed in conditions of safety and in ways that allow the patient to be discharged on the same day as they are admitted without any increase in risk.
The term walk-in indicates aftercare taking less time, up to about ten hours. The practice of walk-in surgery allows for monitoring of the patient after diagnosis or treatment without hospitalization.
One of the aims of walk-in care is to shorten postoperative disability and promote family, school and professional reintegration of the patient.
In some cases, the problem associated with walk-in surgery is that the patient may experience a slight feeling of insecurity compared to the way they feel about a hospital stay with its traditional round the clock supervision.
