Nymphoplasty

Cosmetic Surgery - Plastic Surgery - Aesthetic Medicine - Reconstructive Surgery

Nymphoplasty or reduction labiaplasty is a surgical procedure in the female involving a reduction of the labia minor (small, drooping lips of the vulva). This type of surgery is indicated when there is pain or an excess of more than 4 cm. However, discomfort is not inevitably related to the magnitude of the hypertrophy. Hypertrophy of the labia minora is mainly linked to an influx of hormones (oestrogens) during puberty.
Hypertrophy of the labia minora, a fairly common condition, is the cause of functional disorders during sport and sexual intercourse caused by the retraction of tissue as well as discomfort when wearing of certain garments (swimwear, etc.). From a psychological standpoint, nymphoplasty leads to an improvement in the social and love life of many women who suffer from complexes as a result of this problem. Pregnancy exacerbates this problem and on the other hand menopause causes a decrease in hypertrophy.
Reduction nymphoplasty may be supported by Social Security in cases of proven hypertrophy.
Nymphoplasty is an intervention practised in different ways depending on the characteristics of the hypertrophy. In the vast majority of cases, the techniques used are longitudinal resection or triangular (or V) resection with variants.
Nymphoplasty must be performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, and it is, like any surgical procedure, performed after preoperative assessment and consultation with an anaesthesiologist. Nymphoplasty can be carried out under local anaesthesia in combination with tranquillizers or classic general anaesthesia.
Hospitalization following a nymphoplasty is not necessary. It is carried out on an outpatient basis.
Nymphoplasty is a surgical procedure the duration of which depends on the surgical work to be done by the plastic surgeon. It usually takes one hour. Each surgeon uses his/her own technique that is adjusted to suit each patient so as to get the best results.
It takes a period of 2 to 3 months to allow time for healing (scars are inevitable, permanent, indelible and unpredictable) and recovery of flexibility in the tissues. A timescale of 12 months is needed in order finally to assess the level of scarring.
Nymphoplasty is a delicate type of surgery, requiring a lot of rigour and with all the risks associated with any medical procedure (anaesthesia and surgery) even when carried out under the most favourable conditions, that is to say by a qualified plastic surgeon. Without overstating the risk, a proportion of risks exist. Turning to a qualified plastic surgeon can prevent complications or help to treat them effectively.
