Surgery for hypertrophy of the breast (reduction mammoplasty or breast reduction)
Cosmetic Surgery - Plastic Surgery - Aesthetic Medicine - Reconstructive Surgery
Breast reduction is surgery for breast hypertrophy. Surgery for
hypertrophy of the breast is also known as reduction mammoplasty for
hypertrophy.
Breast hypertrophy is characterized by breasts that are too large with
an oversized breast cone and lowered nipple-areola complex, pointing
downwards. In breast hypertrophy, excess breast volume is also
associated with sagging breasts (breast ptosis) and occasionally a
pre-existing asymmetry problem.
Hypertrophy of the breast very often has physical and functional
consequences (pain, discomfort during sport and dressing) but it is not
without psychological consequences. However, breast hypertrophy
surgery only will be paid for by health insurance where more than 300
grams of skin and mammary gland are removed per breast.
The main aims of the reduction mammoplasty are to get nice, smooth,
shapely breasts, to reposition breasts after reducing the volume, to
adjust the skin and make the scars as short as possible. This type
correction is, of course, adapted to suit the morphology and silhouette
of the woman and her desire to reconstruct both breasts so that they
are harmonious, balanced or as close as possible to symmetry and have
an appearance that is as natural as possible.
Surgery for breast hypertrophy is performed by a qualified specialist
plastic surgeon. Like any surgical procedure it is performed with
preoperative assessment and consultation with an anaesthesiologist.
Breast reduction is done under classic general anaesthesia.
The period of hospitalization after breast reduction surgery is
between two and five days. Breast reduction is a surgical procedure the
duration of which depends on the surgical work to be done by the
plastic surgeon. However, there are constants such as the histological
examination of removed tissue.
The postoperative consequences of breast reduction surgery are
variable in duration and magnitude depending on patient: breast
swelling (oedema), ecchymoses (bruises), feeling of tension in the
breasts and some pain that can be relieved by simple analgesics.
It takes a period of at least one year for the result to be fully
appreciated by the patient. This represents the time needed for healing
and the recovery of tissue flexibility.
Scarring after a reduction mammoplasty involves three permanent and
indelible scars. The eventual appearance of a scar is totally
unpredictable. Healing depends entirely on each patient.
Do not forget that breast reduction for breast hypertrophy is a
surgical procedure carrying all the risks associated with any medical
procedure (anaesthesia and surgery) even when carried out under the
most favourable conditions, that is to say by a qualified plastic
surgeon .. Without overstating the risk, a proportion of risks exist.
Turning to a qualified plastic surgeon can prevent complications or help
to treat them effectively.
