Genioplasty
Cosmetic Surgery - Plastic Surgery - Aesthetic Medicine - Reconstructive Surgery
Genioplasty, also called mentoplasty or chin osteotomy is the surgical
treatment of abnormal positioning of the chin: chin forward (protruding
chin), chin back (micrognatia), chin too big or too small and crooked
chin. This problem of poor chin position has an impact on the aesthetic
harmony of the profile.
A poorly positioned chin can have a number of effects such as damage
to the gums, risk of loosening of the lower teeth, difficulty in lip
closure and sometimes developmental disorders of the jaws.
Genioplasty will try to restore balance to the profile of the face between the jaws and the soft tissues.
Genioplasty is performed by a qualified specialist plastic surgeon. It
is carried out, like any surgical procedure, after preoperative
assessment and consultation with an anaesthesiologist. Genioplasty is
carried out under classic general anaesthesia. The period of
hospitalization following genioplasty is two to four days. A
genioplasty is a procedure the duration of which depends on the
surgical work to be done by the plastic surgeon. Surgical techniques
vary depending on the problems to be solved. In general, the chin will
be approached through an incision in the mouth, with no visible scar.
During genioplasty, the chin is moved and thus the face is more or less modified to achieve frontal and side harmony.
The postoperative consequences of genioplasty vary in duration and
magnitude depending on patient: swelling (oedema in cheeks and lips)
and ecchymoses (bruises). Do not forget that genioplasty is a form of
surgery carrying all the risks associated with any medical procedure
(anaesthesia and surgery) even when carried out under the best
conditions, that is to say by a qualified plastic surgeon. Without
overstating the risk, a proportion of risks exist. Turning to a
qualified plastic surgeon can prevent complications or help to treat
them effectively.
