Cosmetology is the science of everything that allows the skin to remain
healthy. Its task today, is to decorate, treat, prevent and repair. It
uses the science of chemists and biologists to produce non-toxic
cosmetics preventing skin aging and restoring a smooth and youthful
look to the skin. Our times have a relatively negative image of aging
and cosmetics have a role to play between managing one’s own image
thanks to cosmetics and managing the image that society sends us back to
us through all types of media. But cosmetology is constantly evolving
and getting closer, in its work, to the prevention of skin problems and
stimulation of the whole process of skin repair. In this sense,
cosmetology is not far from dermatology.
Modern cosmetology has four main tasks: managing one’s own image,
skin care, disease prevention and revitalization of the skin.
Self-image is clearly linked to a host of other ways of enhancing
body image such as hairstyle, clothing and perfumes. Its primary task
is «decoration" cosmetology.
But self-image is also about the preservation of dignity beyond the
problems associated with age or illness. Cosmetology, by providing a
set of adapted cosmetic products, allows the elderly to retain a
certain charm and through this to remain healthy. The role of
cosmetology during critical illness is not insignificant. It may even
be part of the care of the person who rediscovers, through it, the
dignity that was more or less lost dignity in the wake of serious
health problems.
The maintenance of the skin condition, flexibility and hydration is
another role of cosmetology. A suitable cosmetic product is not just a
surface treatment without pharmacological effects on the underlying
skin. Cosmetics change the cellular and molecular responses of the
epidermis and dermis. They have a biological effect. Cosmetology is
moving towards a better understanding of healthy skin. The ultimate aim
is to arrive at a personalised cosmetic prescription.
Cosmetology also treats normal skin, protecting it against external
attack, especially from the sun. Total protection against aggressive
factors does not and will never exist. We must be aware of this because
the risks include photo aging and skin cancer. Cosmetology must look
to on-going research to understand the cellular and molecular damage
caused by various types of external attack and to develop effective
responses based on comprehensive information on the prevention of the
risk of exposure through the effectiveness of the cosmetic product
developed.
Cosmetology becomes active cosmetology with, for example products in
the field of sun protection that will stop the development of
antioxidants. . Current cosmetology in this field is moving between
research and communication to achieve personalized prevention that will
complement collective prevention.
Repair cosmetology is a new approach. . In this case, it is no longer
protection afforded to the skin but repair to the damage resulting
from attacks of various kinds. . This field of cosmetology is booming,
it imposes strict rules as the border between medicine and cosmetics is
gradually fading. . Therefore guarantees of effectiveness and safety
control are needed before products are put on the market. To avoid
problems in the use of these products it is absolutely necessary to
appeal to fully qualified health professionals.
