Cannulas

Cosmetic Surgery - Plastic Surgery - Aesthetic Medicine - Reconstructive Surgery

Cannulas are elongated instruments, cylindrical, hollow, flexible or rigid, made of different materials, for introducing a liquid or a gas into a cavity or a conduit in the body. For example, during a tracheotomy, by incision of the trachea, it allows the passage of air into the lungs through a cannula placed in the hole. There is a cannula (Guedel or Mayo airway) which is used in the case of a patient in a coma and serves to keep the airway open.
In aesthetic surgery, during a liposuction, we use flexible cannulas, blunt, round – ended and with holes at their end. These are introduced, through very small incisions, in areas to be treated with liposuction. These very fine cannulas can avoid damaging the skin overlying the area to be treated by liposuction. The cannulas are connected to a closed system in which negative pressure is created. Through these blunt cannulas, which are introduced into the fat deposits, the surgeon makes a regular network of tunnels, taking care not to disturb the vessels and nerves, and aspirates the excess fat.
