Breast hypertrophy
Cosmetic Surgery - Plastic Surgery - Aesthetic Medicine - Reconstructive Surgery
Breast hypertrophy is characterized by breasts that are too large with
an oversized breast cone and lowered, downward-facing nipple-areola
complex. In breast hypertrophy, excess breast volume is also associated
with sagging breasts (breast ptosis) and occasionally a pre-existing
asymmetry problem.
Hypertrophy of the breast very often has physical and functional
consequences (pain, discomfort when engaging in sport and when
dressing) but it is not without psychological consequences. However,
breast hypertrophy surgery will only be paid for by health insurance
when more than 300 grams of skin and mammary gland are removed per
breast.
The main aim of surgery for breast hypertrophy (breast reduction
surgery) is to get nice, smooth, shapely breasts, and to reposition
them after reducing the volume, adjust the skin and make the scars as
short as possible. This correction is, of course, adapted to the
morphology, the silhouette of the woman and her wishes to reconstruct
both breasts so that they are harmonious, balanced or as close as
possible to symmetric and so that their appearance is as natural as
possible.
Surgery for hypertrophy of the breast is also called reduction mammoplasty for hypertrophy.
Surgery for breast hypertrophy is performed by a qualified, specialist
plastic surgeon. It is performed like any other surgical procedure,
with preoperative assessment and consultation with an
anaesthesiologist. Breast reduction is carried out under classic
general anaesthesia.
Hospitalization after breast reduction surgery lasts for between two
and five days. Breast reduction surgery is a procedure the duration of
which depends on the surgical work to be done by the plastic surgeon.
However, there are constants such as the histological examination of
removed tissue.
The postoperative consequences of breast reduction surgery are
variable in duration and magnitude depending on the patients: breast
swelling (oedema), ecchymoses (bruises), a feeling of tension in
breasts and some pain which can be relieved by simple analgesics.
It takes a period of at least one year for the result to be fully
appreciated by the patient. This is the time needed for healing and for
the recovery of tissue flexibility.
Scarring after a reduction mammoplasty involves three permanent and
indelible scars. The final appearance of a scar is totally
unpredictable. Healing depends entirely on each patient.
Do not forget that breast reduction for breast hypertrophy is a
surgical procedure with all the risks associated with any medical
procedure (anaesthesia and surgery) even when done under the most
favourable conditions, that is to say by a qualified plastic surgeon.
Without overstating the risk, a proportion of risks exist. Turning to a
qualified plastic surgeon can prevent complications or help to treat
them effectively.
