What is A.S.A.P.S. ?
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), founded in 1967, is the leading professional organization for of plastic surgeons trained by the American Board of Aesthetic Surgery. With 1,900 members in the U.S. and Canada, but also involving members of equivalence recruited on the basis of equivalent qualifications in many other countries, ASAPS is at the forefront of innovation in aesthetic plastic surgery around the world.
The role of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is to provide medical knowledge, public information and assistance to patients.
ASAPS is an educative organization, sponsoring scientific meetings on the latest advances in plastic surgery. ASAPS meetings are conducted with the support assistance of qualified surgeons. The ASAPS supports accredited Continuing Medical Education (CME).

ASAPS is a research organization, collecting data on plastic surgery, publishing annual statistics on the number of surgical procedures performed, and supporting scientific and clinical studies in plastic and aesthetic surgery.
ASAPS is a public information organization, providing accurate and timely information on all aspects of plastic surgery through its website and by working intensively with the news media through its communications office in New York City.
ASAPS is a patient support organization, promoting the highest level of professional ethics through its members as well as representing the rights of patients to be fully informed about the training and qualifications of their doctors.
Not all qualified Plastic Surgeons from the National Council of the College of Physicians are, however, not necessarily ASAPS members.
About ASAPS members:
The conditions for membership of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) are determined so as to promote the candidacy of qualified and experienced surgeons who have honed their skills by practising plastic and aesthetic surgery to the face and body. ASAPS membership remains an exclusive privilege for those surgeons who possess the necessary qualifications. Only one quarter of all U.S. board- certified plastic surgeons have been accepted into ASAPS. Physicians who were trained in specialities other than plastic surgery are not eligible for ASAPS membership.
Among the conditions for nomination to the ASAPS, a plastic surgeon must:
- Be qualified by the American Board of Aesthetic Surgery, or in Plastic Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Plastic surgeons who are not citizens of the United States or Canada who meet the criteria of high professionalism and ethical standards required for ASAPS membership can become associate members of the ASAPS.
- Be at least in its third year of active practice following board certification;
- Attend a accredited Continuing Medical Education (CME) program to stay abreast of developments in the field of plastic surgery;
- Provide evidence that they have performed a significant number and variety of surgical procedures demonstrating extensive experience;
- Be recommended by two surgeons members of the ASAPS to make sure that the applicant's professional reputation meets the standards required by ASAPS and
- Adhere to the moral and ethical rules followed by all ASAPS surgeon members.
